Team Interview
Oliver
I translate customer ideas into digital solutions – from concept to code.
What does your business card say? What do you do at blu BEYOND?
It says: Senior IT Consultant | Software Engineer. In short, I find digital solutions to other people's problems. As an IT consultant, I have contact with customers and accompany projects from the initial technical ideas to implementation. Roughly speaking, I translate ‘customer speak’ into requirements and try to translate these into a clear and understandable concept. I synchronise this with the customer until there are no more questions on either side. As a software engineer, I check each requirement against existing implementations and technical limitations. In new projects, topics such as software architecture and technology selection are given greater weight than in existing projects, where these are often already set. Finally, I implement the requirements from the concept, which is both the most exciting and the most challenging part of my job. After implementation, I support the application in operation as 2nd level support. It's like the proverbial blind reach into a box of chocolates: you never know what to expect.
You work in the automotive industry, right? What makes working there special for you?
What makes this industry special is the technical expertise surrounding individual mobility. Our focus is on driver training and related marketing. Depending on the department, the requirements can be very stable or very volatile over long periods of time. There are also regulatory, legal and seasonal effects that impact our work. We have a long-standing collaboration and a very good relationship with our customers. Since 2014, we have been maintaining and developing our own application, which I have been involved in implementing from the very beginning. Keeping an application up to date over this period of time and developing it further for the customer is a major challenge.
How long have you been working here and why do you keep choosing to stay at blu BEYOND? How did you come to join us?
If you count blu BEYOND's two predecessor companies, then 14 years. A good employer should provide me with a context in which I can do my job to the best of my ability without having to compromise myself. Meetings and processes should always have a tangible benefit. I find a certain degree of autonomy, working from home, minimal bureaucracy, simple and direct communication, and an overall relaxed relationship based on equality to be beneficial. In my first job at a very small company, I had a lot of personal responsibility, independence, support and trust, and these are things that are still important to me. So I looked for an employer where I could work according to my values and ended up at blu BEYOND.
What do you like most about your job?
What makes my job special is the opportunity to work on projects in different industries. This gives you insights into business processes and needs that you wouldn't otherwise have. There is always something interesting to discover, whether it's the automotive industry, a major bank, transport companies or a thermal spa in the Vals mountains. For me, the key thing is to find solutions for these needs, implement them and see how they prove themselves and develop further in the customer's everyday life.
What do you enjoy least?
I really enjoy working intensively on complex problems. What throws me off my stride are other high-priority tasks that force me to completely change context. That literally takes the wind out of my sails.
What's the best way for you to unwind after work?
Being a private person, together with the important people in my life. Walks in nature reliably create space and breadth in my mind. I'm not a sports fanatic, but the relaxing feeling after physical exertion and exercise is unbeatable. And meditation as the perfect counterpoint to my everyday life: letting go, doing nothing, being in the ‘here and now’.
